Carpet Diem – Justin Lee Anderson (Audible)

LOL. I pulled this out of Audible’s plus catalogue and initially didn’t get into “Carpet Diem: or … How to Save the World by Accident.” Recently I tried again and I’m glad because this is a hell of a fun book, easily characterized as a “romp.” Simon inherited his uncle’s money and home and he has become a total recluse, rendering his doorbell useless, changing his phone plan so only a few calls can be made in a month and setting up pizza delivery for when he can be on the second floor. There’s an aunt out there and a cousin and he give them some of the dough.

One day, his doorbell rings (yes, it rings) and he meets, as he quickly discovers, an angel and a demon who are brother and sister. It turns out his living room carpet has been the subject of a long search and they have a bet on which of them will find it first. It is the last piece in a 13 part scavenger hunt that pit Daniel and Lily against one another and will break a tie as to whether men or women are the best occupants of their inadvertent creation, i.e., earth. But, the carpet is stolen before Simon can hear each of their offers for the rug and to make a choice who gets this. And the unlikely recluse ends up flying off in a First Class seat to pursue information on where the rug is and the price to pay for the information takes him on a further adventure. This fantasy book fits one of my favorite categories: Quirky! Lots of really great characters and back stories and magic that fits. There are so many favorite characters! I highly recommend this in audio. It won an audie award for a reason. Great narration. (Note: a fair amount of sexual content and not for people who read the Bible literally/endorse creationism)
