“See them Run” is an exceptional police procedural, set in Scotland. Detective Clare Mackay has moved to Saint Andrews from Glasgow after a bad experience as an armed police officer there. She’s rented an apartment and is just getting to know her community when the first victim of a hit and run murder, a cab driver, is killed. A card with the number 5 is left on the corpse and other than his penchant for women and a dead marriage to a wife who has a boyfriend, there’s no obvious reason why he was murdered. When a second very different man is killed with the same M.O., and with no obvious connection to the first victim, Clare and her team know they have a complicated case on their hands. Already, a DCI from Glasgow has been brought in to oversee things and extra help is being brought in. The tech department is kept busy trying to find information on victims computers and the deaths do not stop.
Meanwhile, Clare is facing a possible civil suit in Glasgow. Her (maybe ex?) boyfriend is still in love with her and trying to help, but he was not by her side when the case against her in Glasgow found her actions were justified. A fun part of the novel is her taking care of a dog belonging to the second victim, head of a very successful brewery until his wife returns from a trip. Clare’s sidekick Chris is a huge support to her and a friend, making a good team for this and future cases. The suspects and the victims and some others who form the motive for the killings are all well written characters along with the solicitors, the DCI who oversees things and even the minor people. Todd brings the entire scenario and all its players to life.
The author, with her Scottish accent that amplifies the setting, does a beautiful job narrating this novel. A great debut. I expect to continue to read this series!
