To Hunt an Heiress – Martha Keyes (audio narrator Paula Hunt)

This book was a fun/funny little romp of a tale, reminiscent of a PG Wodehouse plot but without Jeeves to solve the trip ups. Sebastian Drake, a handsome man from a good family with no money to speak of needs to marry an heiress– and soon –to address an emergency. It is a Regency period setting with a great Chancery Court trial that adds to the amusement. Sebastian meets Selina Lawrence, a beautiful and enormously wealthy young widow, glad to be out of an unhappy marriage. Soon, Selina has good reason to believe that Sebastian is a fortune hunter and she engages with his wooing in ways that are meant to drive him crazy. In other words, she decides to harass him in a variety of clever and amusing ways. Along the way, they find they enjoy the battle of wits,, but this does not sway Selina from her plan to remain unmarried forever and to never marry a fortune hunter. It manages to stay well above stupid without rising to a dull or too high handed plot. Well written and a perfect example of what it is meant to be. The novel is a part of a 7 book series called, “Bachelors of Blackstone.” I enjoyed the audio version and the story with many a smile and not a few guffaws. Well done!
